The SeaSmart WiFi features two major innovations:
- A NMEA2000 - WiFi gateway, which sends NMEA 2000 data via WiFi to the iPad, to be exploited in a compatible application (like iNavX)
- A mini web server that formats the data to make it also readable by any device equiped with a web browser.
Easy installation
The SeaSmart can be simply installed by connecting it to any point of a NMEA 2000 network. It is powered by the network, i.e. no separate power is needed. It creates a WiFi hotspot on which you can connect with a PC, Mac or any mobile terminal like a smartphone or, of course, the iPad.
Display in Web mode
The SeaSmart integrates some pre-set "web" pages into its memory with predefined dials, knobs, gauges and displays corresponding to the usual instruments *. Thus any device (PC, Mac, Smartphone, iPad ..) equipped with a web browser can display NMEA 2000 data without the need for a specific application. This mode is multi-client, ie several devices can be connected together and each can access different information.
To connect to the iPad in web mode, just follow this tutorial.
(Note: the web pages mentioned above are local web pages that can be accessed without any access to the ww web. Advanced users can enrich and reconstruct these pages to adapt the display to their needs, using usual web page design tools.)
Display in iNavX
The SeaSmart can be exploited directly through the iNavX application (from version 3.5 upwards) for the following PGNs:
- 127250: magnetic or true heading
- 127488 & 127489: motor parameters
- 127493: transmission parameters
- 127505: tank level (fuel, freshwater, wastewater ..)
- 127508: battery status
- 128259: speedometer
- 128267: depth
- 129025 & 129026: position, true heading, speed over ground
- 129029 & 129539/40: GPS information
- 129284: course
- 130306: wind data (apparent and true)
- 130311: environmental data: temp, pressure, humidity
(Note: this is only a provisional list, iNavX is gradually integrating new equipment)
NMEA 0183/2000 Multiplexing capability
The SeaSmart is not limited to NMEA 2000, it can also send 0183 data wirelessly, or mix it with other NMEA 2000 data. To do this, simply connect NMEA 0183 devices to the "Serial / USB" input.
(Note: if there are multiple 0183 devices to be connected, then first connect these elements to a 0183 multiplexer like the Miniplex-2S).
Instruments control capability
The NMEA>WiFi gateway works in both directions. Meaning it is also possible to send commands from the iPad to the NMEA network. Useful for example to specify a heading to the autopilot directly from the iPad, through iNavX.
Remote access
The SeaSmart being a web server, it can also connect to an external network via a router. In this case, it is no longer the SeaSmart that provides the network as above, but it becomes the client of an existing WiFi network, available in a marina for example.
In this case, simply type the IP address of SeaSmart on a web browser to connect remotely to the boat. You can verify that everything is fine on board, see the strength and wind direction locally, check the battery levels before you even get to the port !
(Note: reserved to advanced users, needs some knowledge to set IP addresses)
